What exactly is a celebrant?

A celebrant creates and leads personalised ceremonies that aren't restricted by legal requirements or religious traditions. Unlike registrars who follow set scripts and strict time slots, celebrants work with you to craft something completely bespoke – your words, your story, your style. It's the difference between a ceremony that's about you versus a ceremony you fit into.

Can you legally marry us?

In France, legal marriages must be performed by the mayor at the local Mairie. Your celebrant ceremony is the meaningful, personal celebration where you exchange vows and create the atmosphere you want. Many couples have done the legalities in their home country.

In England and Wales, independent celebrants cannot currently perform legally binding ceremonies. You'll complete the legal paperwork at a registry office (usually a quick signing), then have your meaningful celebrant ceremony at your chosen venue.

This separation actually gives you wonderful freedom – your celebration can be anywhere, at any time, with any words you choose.

Where can we have our ceremony?

Anywhere you like. Seriously – there are no restrictions. Gardens, beaches, barns, country houses, forests, family homes, vineyards, olive groves. As long as the venue allows ceremonies and you can gather your guests there, we can make it work. This freedom is one of the biggest advantages of choosing a celebrant.

How long does a ceremony last?

Most ceremonies run 20-35minutes, which feels substantial without losing guests' attention. The exact length depends on what you want to include – readings, symbolic rituals, multiple speakers all extend the time. We'll find the right duration for your vision.

When should we book you?

For peak season weddings (May-September), especially Saturdays, I'd recommend booking 6-12 months ahead. For quieter times or weekdays, 3-6 months is usually fine. Destination weddings in France often book earlier as couples are coordinating multiple elements.

What's your booking process?

We start with an informal conversation – just chatting about your plans so you can decide if I'm the right fit. If you'd like to proceed, I'll send you a booking form and contract. Once I receive your deposit, your date is secured and we can begin planning properly.

Do we have to meet in person?

I love meeting face-to-face when possible, but it's not essential. Many of my couples live far from Norfolk or are planning from abroad. We work perfectly well over Zoom, phone calls, and email. What matters is that we connect and communicate clearly, not whether we're in the same room.

How many meetings do we need?

Typically two substantial meetings – one initial consultation and one deeper planning session. After that, we stay in touch via email or phone as needed. Some couples like additional check-ins, others prefer less contact. I adapt to what works for you.

What if we need to change our date?

Life happens. If you need to move your wedding date, let me know as soon as possible. If I'm available on your new date, we'll simply transfer everything. If not, we'll work out what's fair. I'm understanding about genuine emergencies, but do check my cancellation policy in the contract.

Can we write our own vows?

Absolutely. Many couples want to write personal vows, and I'll support you throughout that process. I can provide structure, examples, and gentle guidance without taking over. The goal is helping you express what's in your heart in words that feel natural when spoken aloud.

What if we're not comfortable writing our own vows?

That's completely fine. We can use traditional vows, I can write vows for you based on what you've shared with me, or we can adapt existing vows to suit your style. There's no pressure to be writers – many people prefer to focus their creativity on other aspects of the ceremony.

Can we include readings or music?

Of course. Readings, poems, songs, even film or book quotes if they're meaningful to you. We can include live musicians, recorded music, singing – whatever creates the atmosphere you want. I'll help you choose pieces that flow naturally and think about timing and placement.

What are symbolic rituals?

Symbolic rituals are actions that represent your union visually. Hand fasting (binding your hands with cord), unity candles (lighting one candle together), sand blending (pouring different colored sands into one vessel), ring warming (guests hold and bless your rings), wine sharing. They're optional additions that some couples love and others skip entirely.

Can we include our children?

Absolutely. Including children can be beautiful – they might do readings, participate in symbolic rituals, make their own promises to the family, or simply stand with you. We'll find roles that feel comfortable for their ages and personalities. The key is making them feel involved without putting pressure on them to perform.

What happens if it rains?

Always have a weather backup plan. Most venues offer indoor alternatives. If your ceremony was planned outside, we simply move it inside and adjust as needed. The ceremony itself stays the same, just the location changes. I've delivered beautiful ceremonies in unexpected rain and blazing sunshine – the weather doesn't diminish the meaning.

Do you use a microphone?

For larger groups or outdoor settings, amplification ensures everyone hears clearly. Many venues have sound systems we can use. For smaller, intimate gatherings in enclosed spaces, my voice projects naturally. We'll discuss what makes sense for your setting and guest numbers.

Most couples don't need a full rehearsal, but we can do a venue visit or walkthrough if it helps you feel prepared. I'll always arrive early on your wedding day to run through any details with you, your wedding party, and venue staff. That usually provides all the reassurance you need.
